Poker Chip Checklist
There are plenty of different poker chips on the market and especially here at GamblersWarehouse.com. The checklist below is designed to help you decide what kind of poker chips you should buy.

The size of your budget
Plastic chips are very inexpensive but not very fun to play with in the long run. Plastic composite chips are very durable and a set of these will probably last you a lifetime. Clay composite chips, on the other hand, are pricey but offer the best touch and feel.

The number of players
As a general rule you should use at least 50 chips per player. If possible, we recommend that you use 80 to 100 chips per player.

How often are you going to play poker?
If you are going to use your poker chips every week you should consider buying plastic composite chips. If you play frequently with a clay chip set you should be aware that you might have to purchase a new set after a while. Plastic composite chips are more durable and do not scuff as easy.

The importance of design
Plastic composite chips are better at displaying design than clay chips because of harder raw material. The design on clay chips can vary a little from chip to chip, this because the clay material sometimes has a tendency to spread out color. Not even in a casino do all of the chips look exactly the same!

You should also consider whether or not you want chips with stickers. Click here for an example of a poker chip with a sticker and click here for an example of a chip without a sticker. Stickers have the advantage that they have a perfect design. Poker chips with a color design, on the other hand, can vary slightly from one chip to another.

When dealing with poker chips with a sticker design, it is important to check that the stickers are absolutely centered. If the sticker is not centered it might peel off quickly.

Printed values versus colors
Poker chips either come with values printed on them or without, values are then instead assigned to different colors. The advantage to using poker chips without printed values is that you can assign whatever value you want to different colors. This is extra important if you want to play tournaments where the levels go up. Conversely, the advantage to using chips with values printed on them is that you do not have to remember the value of the different colors.

Poker chip colors:

  • White chips (commonly used as $1)
  • Red chips (commonly used as $5)
  • Blue chips (commonly used as $10)
  • Green chips (commonly used as $25)
  • Black chips (commonly used as $100)
Impressing your friends
If you want to impress your poker buddies you only have one choice – clay chips. This is what all the casinos in Las Vegas use. Naturally your friends will be impressed if they get to use the same kind of poker chips when playing in your poker home game.

Sound
When splashed against the pot, clay chips give of a “thud” sound that many players like. Plastic composite chips give off a more “ping” like sound.

Chip tricks
Because of their slippery surfaces, composite chips are more suitable for chip tricks than clay chips with their dull surfaces. Also keep in mind that most players prefer heavy chips when they are doing chip tricks.

Weight
Our poker chips range in weight from 5 grams to 15 grams. Most players prefer chips that are on the heavier side of the spectrum. American casino chips generally weigh between 9-10.5 grams.
